A’s Bruce Maxwell first MLB player to kneel for anthem

A’s rookie catcher Bruce Maxwell, who earlier in the day profanely bashed President Trump on Instagram, became the first major-league player to kneel during the national anthem on Saturday before Oakland’s 1-0 win at the Coliseum.

“My decision had been coming for a long time,” Maxwell said, citing his own experiences with racism while growing up in Huntsville, Ala., which is where Trump on Friday made disparaging comments about NFL players who choose to kneel for the anthem. “The only way we can come together is by informing. … To single out NFL players for doing this isn’t something we should be doing — I felt it should be a little more broad.” [Read more…]

Wave of protests grip NFL after Trump urges fan boycott

Los Angeles (AFP) – A wave of protests swept across the National Football League on Sunday as President Donald Trump escalated his feud with players who kneel during the US national anthem to draw attention to racial injustice. Trump ignited a firestorm of criticism after comments on Friday in which he described NFL players who chose to take a knee through renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner” as “sons of bitches” who should be fired. The US leader doubled down on those remarks in an early morning tweet, urging fans to boycott the NFL as long as the protests continued. “If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!” Trump wrote. [Read more…]

What is DACA and why is the Trump administration ending it?

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an American immigration policy established by the Obama administration in June 2012. DACA allows certain illegal immigrants who entered the country as minors to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for a work permit.

The Trump administration announced on Tuesday the “wind down” of an Obama-era program that, in part, allows for hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants to remain in the country. The administration officially announced its plan to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program – which provides a level of amnesty to certain undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children – with a six-month delay for current recipients. Trump’s Surprise Deal With Democrats Sets Up Christmas Showdown

President Donald Trump’s unexpected decision to spurn his Republican allies in Congress by striking a short-term debt-limit deal with Democrats leaves the GOP reeling and lawmakers bracing for a bruising battle in December. Trump’s move undercut GOP leaders in the House and Senate, as well as his own Treasury secretary, who had been arguing for a longer-term extension. It also left Republicans, who were blindsided by the deal, angry and disappointed with their own leaders and, to a lesser degree, Trump. [Read more…]

The Latest: Paul Ryan hopes Congress will act on young immigrants

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump’s decision to phase out a program that shields from deportation young immigrants brought to the country illegally (all times local): 11:45 a.m. House Speaker Paul Ryan says Barack Obama’s existing policy for immigrants brought to the country as children was a “clear abuse of executive authority” and now it’s incumbent upon Congress to act. In a statement Tuesday, the Wisconsin Republican says the heart of the issue is “young people who came to this country through no fault of their own.” Ryan says it is his hope that the House and Senate – with the president’s leadership – will find consensus on a permanent legislative solution to the issue. He says it is important to ensure that those who have done nothing wrong can still contribute “as a valued party of this great country.” Ryan’s statement came after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced he was rescinding the program known as DACA. Irma becomes strongest Atlantic hurricane outside Gulf and Caribbean ever recorded

Irma spun into a monster storm Tuesday morning with sustained winds topping 180 mph, becoming the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded outside the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, National Hurricane Center forecasters said in their 11 a.m. advisory.

As the hurricane churns closer to the U.S. coast, its path becomes more certain, with South Florida, particularly the Keys, increasingly likely to take a hit. Tropical storm force winds could arrive as early as Friday. Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency for all 67 counties and will spend much of Tuesday morning in hurricane briefings. Dr. Michael Savage Gives President Trump a Prescription to Fix His Presidency

During Thursday’s Savage Nation monologue, Michael Savage gave President Trump a specific series of steps he should follow to solve his problems with leftists intent on “creating a false enemy called Russia.” Although Savage speaks in his impassioned style, his advice comes across clearly — this isn’t an illegible scribble from the family doctor.  In short, Savage suggests that Donald Trump go on the attack. Savage believes “the propaganda damage has been done.” But he also says, “I will not jump ship.” [Read more…]

Cancel Donald Trump state visit, says Sadiq Khan, after London attack tweets

London mayor says US president is wrong about many things and that state visit to Britain should not go ahead. The London mayor, Sadiq Khan, has called on the British government to cancel a planned state visit by Donald Trump after being criticised in two tweets by the US president. Trump initially criticised Khan for his response to the London Bridge terrorist attack; though, in doing so, he misquoted London’s mayor. Khan’s office pointed out Trump’s error later but the president responded by accusing London’s mayor of making a “pathetic excuse”.  [Read more…]
